Quick answer
First make sure the load isn’t too big and the drum turns freely by hand with power off. If it is heavy or stuck, there is a trapped object or bearing damage. If it is free but the motor won’t turn it, the cause is the motor, speed sensor, belt (on belt models) or board — usually with 3E.
Overview
Many Samsung front-loaders use an inverter motor with direct drive or a belt depending on the model. Either way, the board needs a speed-sensor signal to know the drum is moving correctly.
If the drum doesn’t turn while holding water, no washing is actually happening — so don’t keep restarting before finding the cause.
Likely causes
-
1
Overloading
Wet laundry is very heavy; exceeding capacity leaves the motor unable to turn the drum and 3E appears.
-
2
Object trapped between drums
A bra wire, coin or clip caught between inner and outer drum blocks rotation or causes rubbing.
-
3
Broken or slipping belt
On belt-driven models, the motor turns but the drum doesn’t.

Motor or speed sensor
Damaged motor windings, speed sensor or connectors prevent rotation, usually with 3E.

5
Bearings
Badly damaged bearings make the drum heavy or seized.

6
Door lock or board
If the board can’t confirm the door is locked it won’t run the motor; a faulty motor circuit on the board gives the same result.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.
- Reduce the load to about three-quarters of the drum and restart.
- Unplug, drain the water, then turn the drum by hand: is it free, heavy or stuck?
- Listen for rubbing or metallic scraping while turning it.
- Make sure the door is firmly closed and dE isn’t shown.
Parts involved
Motor
Turns the drum during washing and spinning; many modern Samsung washers use an inverter motor.
Motor speed (Hall) sensor
Reports motor speed and position to the control board.
Drive belt
On belt-driven models, transfers motion from the motor to the drum pulley.
Drum bearings
Let the drum spin smoothly; when worn they cause a rumble that rises with spin speed.
Door lock
An electrical unit that locks the door during a cycle and confirms to the control board that it is safely closed.
Main control board (PCB)
The washer’s brain: reads sensors and drives the motor, pump, valves and heater.
When should you call a technician?
- The drum turns freely by hand but the washer won’t turn it.
- The drum is very heavy or stuck.
- 3E appears or you smell burning.
- You hear the motor running with no drum movement.

Frequently asked questions
Does 3E always mean the motor is broken?
No. Overloading, trapped objects and loose connectors are common causes. Electrical measurement shows the motor’s condition.
Do Samsung washers use belts?
It depends on the model — many recent models use direct-drive motors without a belt, some use a belt.
How do I get clothes out if the drum is stuck with water inside?
Drain the water through the pump filter with power off, then wait for the lock to release. Don’t force the door.
