Quick answer
If you hear the motor running, the drum is still, and it turns very easily by hand, the belt is probably broken. If the drum is heavy or grinds, the rollers or motor are at fault. If nothing happens at all, start with the door and power.
Overview
In most dryers a long belt wraps around the drum and connects to a motor that turns both drum and fan, with rollers supporting the drum and an idler pulley keeping the belt tight.
Belts and rollers wear with use, and a broken belt is often preceded by squeaking or rubbing.
Likely causes
-
1
Broken drum belt
The motor runs, the drum stays still, and it spins unusually easily by hand.

-
2
Worn rollers or idler pulley
Cause squeaking before they hinder rotation or break the belt.

3
Motor fault
Humming without rotation, no sound at all, or a burning smell.

4
Door not closed
The door switch prevents running unless the door is firmly closed; dE may show.

5
Overload or trapped item
A very heavy load, or a garment caught between drum and door edge.

6
Control board
If the run command doesn’t reach the motor.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before any check. Don’t run it if you notice a burning smell or smoke, and don’t open the back or side panels — they hide heating elements and high-voltage wiring.
- Make sure the door is firmly closed and the lint filter is seated properly.
- Reduce the load and restart.
- Unplug and turn the drum by hand: very easy (broken belt) or hard (rollers or trapped item)?
- Check the door edge and drum lip for trapped clothing.
Parts involved
Drum belt
Wraps around the drum and transfers motion from the motor; if it breaks the motor runs but the drum stays still.
Rollers & idler pulley
Support the drum and tension the belt; wear causes squeaking or rubbing.
Motor
Turns the drum and often the air blower too.
Door switch
Confirms the door is closed; without it the dryer won’t start.
Control board
Runs programmes, reads temperature and moisture sensors, and drives the motor and heating.
When should you call a technician?
- The drum turns very easily by hand while the motor runs.
- You hear humming without rotation or smell burning.
- Loud squeaking or rubbing before it stopped.
- The dryer doesn’t respond at all despite power.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run the dryer with a broken belt?
Not recommended — on some designs a belt switch stops the motor; on others stationary clothes can overheat in one spot.
How do I know the rollers are worn?
A regular squeak or rubbing sound as the drum turns is a common sign.
Is replacing the belt complicated?
It requires opening the cabinet and routing the belt correctly around drum and pulleys, so a technician is recommended.
