Samsung dryer stops mid-cycle

The dryer starts normally then suddenly stops, or announces the end while clothes are still damp. The timing and any message on the display are the key to diagnosis.

Quick answer

On condenser and heat-pump dryers the commonest cause is a full water tank. Next come clogged filters that raise temperature until the protection cuts out, then moisture sensors coated with residue that make the dryer “think” clothes are dry.

Overview

A dryer stops for one of two reasons: a safety condition is no longer met (full tank, door opened, overheating, unstable voltage), or the board decides the clothes are dry based on sensor readings.

In the first case a reminder or code usually appears; in the second the cycle ends “normally” — just too early.

Likely causes

  1. 1

    Water tank full

An “Empty water” reminder appears and the dryer stops — a reminder, not a fault, unless it repeats with an empty tank.

  2. 2

    Overheating from blocked airflow

A clogged filter or condenser raises temperature so protection cuts out temporarily or HE appears.

  3. 3

    Coated moisture sensors

Fabric-softener residue on the metal strips makes the dryer end the cycle early.

  4. 4

Load too big or too small

A tiny load doesn’t touch the sensors well; a huge one tangles and dries unevenly.

  5. 5

    Door or supply voltage

A door that pops open with vibration (dE) or supply fluctuations (9E) stop the cycle.

  6. 6

    Control board

If the dryer stops randomly without a code even though everything above checks out.

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before any check

Unplug the dryer and let it cool before any check. Don’t run it if you notice a burning smell or smoke, and don’t open the back or side panels — they hide heating elements and high-voltage wiring.

  1. Empty the water tank before every cycle on condenser and heat-pump dryers, and push it back until it clicks.
  2. Clean the lint filter, and the condenser or its secondary filter per your model’s manual.
  3. Wipe the moisture sensors inside the drum (usually metal strips near the filter) with a cloth and a little diluted white vinegar, then dry them.
  4. Try a medium load of similar fabrics; don’t dry one large item alone.
  5. If the dryer is stacked or on an uneven floor, make sure it’s stable so the door can’t pop open.
  6. Note any code shown when it stops.

Parts involved

Water tank & condensate pump

Collects condensed water via a small pump; a full tank stops the dryer.

Lint filter

Catches lint from clothes; a clogged filter is one of the top causes of poor drying and overheating.

Thermostats & thermal fuse

Safety devices that cut heating when temperature rises too high; the thermal fuse can blow after an airflow blockage.

Moisture sensors

Metal strips inside the drum that measure laundry moisture to decide when to stop; residue makes the dryer stop early.

Door switch

Confirms the door is closed; without it the dryer won’t start.

Control board

Runs programmes, reads temperature and moisture sensors, and drives the motor and heating.

When should you call a technician?

  • The tank reminder shows with an empty tank.
  • HE keeps returning after cleaning the filters.
  • It always stops after a few minutes and the cabinet is hot.
  • It stops randomly without any code.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dryer finish with clothes still damp?

Usually the moisture sensors are coated with softener residue, or the load is too small. Clean the sensors and try a medium load.

Should I empty the water tank after every cycle?

Yes — it’s the best habit with condenser and heat-pump dryers; otherwise the next cycle may stop halfway.

Can the dryer drain directly to a waste pipe?

Many condenser and heat-pump models support a drain hose instead of the tank. Check your manual; a technician can fit it.
