Quick answer
A Samsung washer usually skips or slows the spin for two reasons: an unbalanced load (UE) or water that hasn’t drained (5E). Redistribute the load and clean the pump filter first. If it persists with balanced loads and good draining, the motor, its sensors or the shock absorbers may be at fault.
Overview
Before spinning, the washer makes several attempts to spread the laundry evenly and checks all water has drained. If either check fails, it skips the spin or spins very slowly — sometimes showing UE, sometimes stopping silently.
So many “won’t spin” complaints aren’t motor faults at all but loading or drain issues. However, if it happens with normal loads, it needs a proper check.
Likely causes
-
1
Unbalanced load
One heavy item (blanket, small rug, jacket) or a very small load bunches on one side, so the washer can’t balance it and cancels the spin.
-
2
Water left due to a drain problem
The washer won’t spin until water has gone. A clogged pump filter or hose prevents spinning even without 5E.

3
Programme or setting without spin
Some programmes (wool, silk) spin slowly, and the spin option may be set to “No spin” or “Rinse hold”.
-
4
Worn shock absorbers or springs
When the dampers weaken the drum moves violently; the system senses excess vibration and cancels the spin even with a balanced load.

5
Motor or speed sensor problem
If the washer washes but never reaches spin speed, or shows 3E, the motor, speed sensor or wiring may be at fault.

Door lock or control board
Spinning only starts with a secure lock. A faulty lock or wrong board reading can stop the final stage.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.
- Check the programme and spin-speed setting, and try “Rinse + Spin” at high speed.
- Open the door and redistribute the load; add a few items if it is one heavy piece.
- Unplug and clean the pump filter as in the not-draining guide.
- Make sure the washer is level, its feet are firm, and transit bolts were removed if it is new.
- With power off, turn the drum by hand — it should rotate smoothly without grinding.
Parts involved
Pump filter
A filter in front of the pump that catches lint, coins and small objects; usually opened from a small cover at the bottom front.
Shock absorbers & springs
Support the tub and absorb vibration; wear causes shaking and noise during spin.
Motor
Turns the drum during washing and spinning; many modern Samsung washers use an inverter motor.
Motor speed (Hall) sensor
Reports motor speed and position to the control board.
Door lock
An electrical unit that locks the door during a cycle and confirms to the control board that it is safely closed.
Main control board (PCB)
The washer’s brain: reads sensors and drives the motor, pump, valves and heater.
When should you call a technician?
- It won’t spin even with a medium, balanced load and a clean filter.
- 3E or 8E appears, or you smell burning.
- You hear heavy banging or rumbling when it tries to spin.
- The drum feels stiff or noisy when turned by hand.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it spin sometimes and not others?
That pattern is typical of unbalanced loads — it depends on what is in each wash. If it happens with every load, the cause is usually mechanical or drain-related.
Does high-speed spinning harm the washer?
No, it is designed for it. But high speed with an unbalanced load or weak dampers increases vibration and wear.
Could the floor be the problem?
Yes — uneven or springy floors increase vibration, so the system cancels the spin. Adjust the feet and make sure the washer is stable.
