Samsung dryers

Samsung dryer not heating

The drum turns and the programme runs, but clothes come out cold and wet. Heating in a dryer is closely tied to airflow, so diagnosis always starts at the filters.

Quick answer

First check the lint filter and condenser — blockages make the safety devices cut the heat. Then come failures of the heating element, thermal fuse, temperature sensor or board. Heat-pump dryers run cooler by design, but completely cold air means a problem.

Overview

A dryer passes warm air through wet laundry. If lint restricts the airflow, heat builds up around the heater quickly and the safety devices (thermostats and thermal fuse) cut the heating to prevent fire.

Heating differs by type: vented and condenser dryers use an electric heater, while heat-pump dryers use a compressor and heat exchangers and run cooler for longer.

Likely causes

  1. 1

    Clogged lint filter or condenser

The most common cause: air can’t flow, so safeties cut the heat or HE appears.

  2. 2

    Failed heating element

In vented and condenser dryers, an open heater element means completely cold air.

  3. 3

    Thermal fuse or thermostat

If the thermal fuse has blown after earlier overheating, heating stops until it’s replaced and the cause fixed.

  4. 4

    Temperature sensor

A wrong reading makes the board stop heating, or shows tS or tO.

  5. 5

    Heat-pump system

In heat-pump dryers, a compressor fault or blocked exchangers weakens heating.

  6. 6

    Board or no-heat programme

An “Air/Cool” programme runs without heat, or the heating circuit has failed.

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before any check

Unplug the dryer and let it cool before any check. Don’t run it if you notice a burning smell or smoke, and don’t open the back or side panels — they hide heating elements and high-voltage wiring.

  1. Make sure the selected programme isn’t “Cool air” or “Air refresh”.
  2. Remove and fully clean the lint filter; wash it if the mesh has a thin film, then dry it.
  3. Clean the condenser or its secondary filter per your manual (if your model allows it).
  4. On vented dryers, make sure the vent duct isn’t blocked or crushed.
  5. Run a small load for 15 minutes and check the air in the drum is warm.

Parts involved

Lint filter

Catches lint from clothes; a clogged filter is one of the top causes of poor drying and overheating.

Heating element

Heats the air in condenser and vented dryers; heat-pump dryers use a different heating system.

Thermostats & thermal fuse

Safety devices that cut heating when temperature rises too high; the thermal fuse can blow after an airflow blockage.

Temperature sensor

Measures air temperature so the board can control heating.

Heat-pump system

A compressor and heat exchangers that heat air and condense moisture efficiently in heat-pump dryers.

Control board

Runs programmes, reads temperature and moisture sensors, and drives the motor and heating.

When should you call a technician?

  • Filters are clean and the air is completely cold.
  • HE, tS or tO appears repeatedly.
  • You noticed a burning smell before heating stopped.
  • The breaker trips when heating starts.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a heat-pump dryer less hot?

It’s designed to dry at lower temperatures for longer to save energy and protect fabrics — normal, not a fault.

How often should I clean the lint filter?

After every drying cycle — the single most important habit for safety and efficiency.

Is a blown thermal fuse the real problem?

It usually blows because of overheating from a blocked air path. Replacing it without fixing the cause means it will blow again.
