Samsung dryer not drying clothes properly

The dryer heats and tumbles, yet clothes come out damp or drying takes twice as long. It’s one of the most common complaints, and most causes relate to routine maintenance and use.

Quick answer

Clean the lint filter and condenser first, make sure clothes were spun well in the washer, and don’t overload. If the dryer stops early with damp clothes, the moisture sensors may be coated with softener and need cleaning. A weak fan or blocked internal path needs a technician.

Overview

Good drying needs three things: warm air, strong airflow, and a way to remove moisture (a vent duct, or a condenser that turns it into water). Weakness in any of them extends drying.

Many Samsung dryers use moisture sensors to decide when to stop. If they’re dirty, the dryer may think clothes are dry and stop early.

Likely causes

  1. 1

    Clogged lint filter

Even a thin layer of lint or softener residue on the mesh significantly reduces airflow.

  2. 2

    Dirty condenser or heat exchanger

In condenser and heat-pump dryers, lint on the condenser prevents moisture removal.

Related parts: Condenser / heat exchanger

  3. 3

    Dirty moisture sensors

Softener or detergent film on the metal strips inside the drum makes the dryer stop early.

    Related parts: Moisture sensors

  4. 4

Very wet clothes or large loads

Poor spinning in the washer, overloading, or mixing heavy and light fabrics extend drying.

  5. 5

Full water tank or blocked vent

A full tank stops drying; a blocked vent duct on vented dryers traps moisture.

  6. 6

    Weak fan or heating

A weak blower or reduced heating clearly lengthens drying time.

    Related parts: Blower fan

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before any check

Unplug the dryer and let it cool before any check. Don’t run it if you notice a burning smell or smoke, and don’t open the back or side panels — they hide heating elements and high-voltage wiring.

  1. Clean the lint filter after every cycle and wash its mesh periodically to remove softener residue.
  2. Clean the condenser or its filter per your manual.
  3. Wipe the moisture sensors inside the drum (metal strips, usually near the filter) with a cloth and a little white vinegar or alcohol, then dry.
  4. Spin clothes at high speed in the washer before drying.
  5. Don’t fill the drum more than two-thirds, and separate heavy from light fabrics.
  6. Empty the water tank before every cycle.

Parts involved

Lint filter

Catches lint from clothes; a clogged filter is one of the top causes of poor drying and overheating.

Condenser / heat exchanger

In condenser and heat-pump dryers it turns moisture into water; lint build-up weakens drying.

Moisture sensors

Metal strips inside the drum that measure laundry moisture to decide when to stop; residue makes the dryer stop early.

Blower fan

Pushes warm air through the laundry and condenser; weakness lengthens drying and raises temperature.

Vent duct

In vented dryers carries moist air outdoors; a blockage is a hazard and weakens drying.

Water tank & condensate pump

Collects condensed water via a small pump; a full tank stops the dryer.

When should you call a technician?

  • Drying is poor despite clean filters and condenser.
  • Airflow is very weak.
  • It keeps stopping early despite cleaning the sensors.
  • HE appears or you smell burning.

Frequently asked questions

How long should normal drying take?

It depends on load, fabric and dryer type; heat-pump dryers naturally take longer. What matters is a sudden change.

Why are towels damp while light clothes are dry?

Heavy fabrics need longer. Dry them in a separate cycle.

Does fabric softener harm the dryer?

Too much leaves a film on the lint filter and moisture sensors. Use it sparingly and clean both regularly.
