Quick answer
First make sure the fridge isn’t in demo mode (OF OF), the temperature is set correctly, there’s ventilation space behind it, and the doors seal properly. If the freezer is cold and the fridge warm, the cause is usually a fan or ice on the evaporator. If both are warm, the compressor, inverter board or power supply is more likely.
Overview
Modern Samsung fridges are usually No Frost: one or two evaporators behind the inner panels, fans that distribute cold air, and an automatic defrost cycle that prevents ice build-up. A fault anywhere in this chain shows up as weak cooling.
The key diagnostic question: where is the problem — fridge only, freezer only, or both? And is the compressor running (a soft hum and vibration at the back) or completely silent?
Likely causes
-
1
Demo mode or temperature settings
Demo mode (OF OF) turns cooling off on purpose, and a high setting or Vacation mode can feel like weak cooling.

2
Poor ventilation or dusty condenser
The fridge releases heat at the back and bottom; fitting it tight to a wall, in a narrow cabinet, or letting dust build up weakens cooling and strains the compressor.

3
Evaporator fan
If the circulation fan stops, cold air stays around the evaporator and never reaches the shelves; 21E or 22E may appear.

4
Ice build-up on the evaporator
A defrost heater or sensor fault lets ice build up until it blocks airflow; cooling weakens gradually over days.

5
Compressor or inverter board
If the compressor never runs, or starts and stops, the cause may be the supply, the inverter board or the compressor; 84C may appear.

6
Refrigerant leak
Relatively rare but possible — cooling weakens gradually while the compressor runs long without result.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the fridge before cleaning the rear grille or moving it, and close the water supply tap if there’s a leak. Don’t remove inner panels or the compressor cover, and never chip ice with sharp tools — you could puncture the refrigerant tubing.
- Make sure the display doesn’t show OF OF; if it does, see your manual to cancel demo mode.
- Check the settings: typically around 3 °C for the fridge and −18 °C for the freezer.
- Leave ventilation space behind and beside the fridge per your manual, away from ovens and heat sources.
- Vacuum dust from the rear or bottom grille with the fridge unplugged (without removing any cover).
- Don’t pack the fridge so tightly that internal vents are blocked, and don’t put hot food straight in.
- Check the doors close firmly — a sheet of paper shut in the door should be held tightly.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan; feel the side or lower back — slight warmth means the compressor is running.
Parts involved
Condenser coil
Releases heat from the refrigerant into the room; dust on it weakens cooling and strains the compressor.
Condenser fan
Cools the condenser and compressor in the rear machine compartment.
Evaporator fan
Distributes cold air across the shelves; if it stops, the freezer may stay cold while the fridge warms.
Evaporator
The cold coil behind the freezer or fridge panel that absorbs heat from the air inside.
Defrost heater
Periodically melts frost off the evaporator in No Frost systems; failure causes ice build-up and weak cooling.
Compressor
The heart of the cooling cycle, compressing and circulating refrigerant. Modern models usually use a variable-speed inverter compressor.
Inverter board
Controls the inverter compressor speed; a fault can stop a healthy compressor.
Sealed refrigerant system
The sealed tubing and refrigerant; any leak weakens cooling and needs a refrigeration specialist.
When should you call a technician?
- Both fridge and freezer are warm despite correct settings and ventilation.
- The compressor is silent, or you hear a click every few minutes.
- Thick ice on the back wall inside the freezer.
- The fan doesn’t run or scrapes.
- A code such as 84C, 21E or 5E appears.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a fridge take to cool after switching on?
A new fridge, or one after defrosting, may need several hours and up to 24 hours to fully stabilise, especially with a large load.
The freezer is cold but the fridge is warm — why?
Usually an airflow problem: a stopped fan, ice blocking the duct between freezer and fridge, or a stuck damper on some models.
Does summer heat affect the fridge?
Yes, especially with poor ventilation. The fridge runs longer in heat, and dust on the condenser doubles the effect.
Could it be the gas?
Possible but not the most common. Ventilation, fans, defrost and power should be ruled out first, and confirming a leak needs a refrigeration specialist.
