Ice and frost build-up in a Samsung refrigerator

No Frost fridges are designed to defrost automatically, so ice build-up is a sign something isn’t working. Where the ice forms and what it looks like point to the cause.

Quick answer

Soft frost on food and near the door usually means humid air entering through a door that doesn’t seal. A hard layer of ice on the back wall or freezer floor usually means a defrost system fault (heater, sensor or drain).

Overview

In a No Frost system, frost forms on the evaporator hidden behind the inner panel; several times a day a defrost heater melts it, and the water runs down a drain to a pan above the compressor where it evaporates.

If defrost fails, ice grows on the evaporator until it shows behind the panel or blocks airflow and cooling weakens. If the drain blocks, defrost water freezes on the freezer floor or runs into the fridge.

Likely causes

  1. 1

    Humid air from the door

A door that doesn’t fully close, a damaged gasket, or frequent opening — soft frost near the door and on food.

  2. 2

    Defrost heater

If the heater or its fuse fails, ice doesn’t melt off the evaporator; ice shows on the back wall and 5E may appear.

    Related parts: Defrost heater

  3. 3

    Defrost sensor

A wrong reading ends defrost early or prevents it; 4E may appear.

    Related parts: Defrost sensor

  4. 4

    Blocked defrost drain

Melt water can’t escape, so it freezes on the freezer floor or leaks.

  5. 5

    Control board

If the parts are fine but the defrost cycle never starts.

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before any check

Unplug the fridge before cleaning the rear grille or moving it, and close the water supply tap if there’s a leak. Don’t remove inner panels or the compressor cover, and never chip ice with sharp tools — you could puncture the refrigerant tubing.

  1. Make sure doors and drawers close firmly and the gaskets are clean and intact.
  2. Avoid leaving doors open for long, and cover food and liquids well.
  3. Note where the ice is: near the door (humidity) or on the back wall (defrost).
  4. For a temporary manual defrost: empty and unplug the fridge, leave the doors open with towels to soak up water until all ice has melted (this can take hours).
  5. Never chip ice with sharp tools or use a hair dryer close to plastic.

Parts involved

Defrost heater

Periodically melts frost off the evaporator in No Frost systems; failure causes ice build-up and weak cooling.

Defrost sensor

Tells the board when the evaporator is clear so it can end the defrost cycle.

Evaporator

The cold coil behind the freezer or fridge panel that absorbs heat from the air inside.

Door gasket

Seals the door; damage lets in warm humid air, weakening cooling and forming frost.

Defrost drain

Carries melted frost to a pan above the compressor to evaporate; a blockage causes water or ice at the bottom.

Main control board

Reads sensors and runs the compressor, fans and defrost.

When should you call a technician?

  • Ice returns on the back wall days after a manual defrost.
  • Frozen water on the freezer floor or water running into the fridge.
  • Weak cooling with 4E, 5E or 21E.
  • The fan scraping on ice.

Frequently asked questions

Is some ice normal in a No Frost fridge?

Very light frost after opening the door can appear and disappear; permanent ice build-up isn’t normal and indicates a fault.

How often does automatic defrost run?

It varies by model and usage — the system decides automatically and needs no input from you.

Does a manual defrost harm the fridge?

Not if done gently without sharp tools or direct heat — but it’s only a temporary fix if defrost has a fault.
