Quick answer
If the light and display are off, start with the socket and breaker. If they work but there’s no cooling, check for demo mode (OF OF) and low-voltage (85E) or compressor (84C) codes. After a power cut, many fridges wait a few minutes before starting the compressor to protect it — that’s normal.
Overview
A fridge works in stages: the board gets power, reads the sensors, then runs the compressor and fans via the inverter board. If the first stage fails the fridge is completely dead; if later stages fail the light works without cooling.
In some areas the supply drops or fluctuates, and modern fridges protect themselves by stopping the compressor and showing a code.
Likely causes
-
1
Socket or breaker
A dead socket, tripped breaker, or weak or damaged extension lead.
Related parts: Wiring & connectors
-
2
Demo mode
Light and display work but cooling is off because of demo mode (OF OF).

3
Low voltage or post-outage protection
The fridge stops the compressor at low voltage (85E), and waits after power returns before starting.

4
Control board or power supply
A board that gets no power or has failed leaves the fridge completely dead.
Related parts: Main control board

5
Inverter board or compressor
The light works but the compressor won’t start; 84C may appear.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the fridge before cleaning the rear grille or moving it, and close the water supply tap if there’s a leak. Don’t remove inner panels or the compressor cover, and never chip ice with sharp tools — you could puncture the refrigerant tubing.
- Test the socket with another appliance and check the breaker.
- Plug the fridge directly into an earthed wall socket — no extension lead.
- Inspect the power cord and plug for melting, heat or sharp kinks.
- If the display shows OF OF, cancel demo mode per your manual.
- After power returns, wait 10–15 minutes before judging the compressor.
- Note any code on the display.
Parts involved
Wiring & connectors
Link components to the board; moisture or rubbing can cause breaks or shorts.
Main control board
Reads sensors and runs the compressor, fans and defrost.
Inverter board
Controls the inverter compressor speed; a fault can stop a healthy compressor.
Compressor
The heart of the cooling cycle, compressing and circulating refrigerant. Modern models usually use a variable-speed inverter compressor.
Display panel
The door display and buttons for setting temperature and showing codes.
When should you call a technician?
- The socket works but the fridge is completely dead.
- The light works but the compressor is still silent after 15 minutes.
- You hear repeated clicking from the back every few minutes.
- The plug or socket is hot or discoloured.
- 84C or 85E appears although the supply is stable.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t the compressor start right after a power cut?
Many fridges delay the compressor a few minutes to protect it from starting under high pressure. Wait a little before worrying.
Can voltage fluctuations damage the fridge?
Repeated fluctuations can strain the inverter board and compressor over time, so use a direct socket — a suitable stabiliser can help where supply is weak.
How long does food stay safe if the fridge stops?
Keep the doors closed as much as possible; a closed fridge stays cold for hours, and a full freezer for longer.
