Quick answer
If the display is completely dark, check the socket, breaker and extension lead. If the display works but the cycle won’t start, common causes are an unlocked door, child lock, delay start, or not holding Start long enough. If it persists with codes like AE or bE, the boards need checking.
Overview
Before looking for an internal fault, rule out simple external causes — a noticeable share of “washer won’t work” cases are power or a display setting.
Modern Samsung washers check several conditions before starting: door locked, water available, suitable voltage. If any fails, it won’t start or shows a code.
Likely causes
-
1
No power reaching the washer
A dead socket, tripped breaker or weak extension lead. Try another appliance in the same socket.
-
2
Programme won’t start after pressing Start
Many models need Start held for two or three seconds, and “Delay start” may be on, so the washer waits.
-
3
Child lock
Disables the buttons; its icon shows on the display.
-
4
Door not locked
If the door doesn’t lock, the cycle won’t start and dE may appear.

Stuck button or faulty button board
Moisture or dirt in the buttons prevents response or shows bE.

6
Control board or mains filter
A fault in the board’s power supply or the noise filter leaves the washer unresponsive, or shows AE.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.
- Try another appliance in the same socket and check the breaker.
- Plug the washer directly into the wall, without an extension lead.
- Look for the child-lock icon and switch it off per your manual.
- Make sure Delay start is off, and press-and-hold Start.
- Open and firmly close the door until the lock clicks.
- Unplug for 10 minutes, then reconnect.
Parts involved
Door lock
An electrical unit that locks the door during a cycle and confirms to the control board that it is safely closed.
Display & button board
The interface where you choose programmes and see time and error codes.
Main control board (PCB)
The washer’s brain: reads sensors and drives the motor, pump, valves and heater.
Mains noise (EMI) filter
A component at the power inlet that protects the circuit; failure can trip the breaker.
Wiring & connectors
Link components to the board; moisture or rubbing can cause breaks or shorts.
When should you call a technician?
- The display is completely dark although the socket has power.
- The washer trips the breaker as soon as it is plugged in.
- AE, bE or 9E appears after restarting.
- The display flickers or shows garbled characters.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the display light up but the washer won’t start?
Usually the door isn’t locked, child lock is on, delay start is set, or Start needs a long press.
Can power cuts damage the washer?
Frequent cuts and surges can harm electronic boards over time. Unplug during long outages if possible.
Does a reset help?
Often, yes — unplugging for 10 minutes clears temporary board errors.
