Quick answer
If the door won’t open after a cycle, wait two to three minutes and check for water in the drum — if there is, the problem is usually draining. If the washer won’t start and shows dE, make sure no clothing is trapped. A failed lock unit or door hook needs the part replacing.
Overview
Samsung front-loaders use an electrical lock that engages at the start of a cycle and releases shortly after it ends, once the water level has dropped and the drum has stopped.
So many “door won’t open” cases are really water that hasn’t drained — not the lock itself.
Likely causes
-
1
Water left in the drum
If the washer hasn’t drained (5E), the door stays locked to prevent flooding.

2
Child lock enabled
Child lock blocks setting changes and, on some models, door opening; its icon shows on the display.
-
3
Trapped clothing or door not closed
A garment between door and seal prevents a full close, so the door won’t lock and dE appears.

-
4
Door hook or hinge
The hook that enters the lock can break or bend from slamming or leaning on the door.
-
5
Failed door-lock unit
An electrical or mechanical fault in the lock leaves it unable to lock or unlock.

6
Wiring or control board
The signal between lock and board is lost through a wire, connector or board fault.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.
- Wait 2–3 minutes after the cycle ends — the lock delays on purpose.
- Check the display for the child-lock icon and switch it off as your manual describes (often a long press on two buttons).
- If there is water in the drum, unplug and drain it safely through the pump filter.
- If it won’t lock: open the door, clear any trapped clothing and close it firmly.
- Switch off and unplug for a minute, then restart.
Parts involved
Door lock
An electrical unit that locks the door during a cycle and confirms to the control board that it is safely closed.
Door seal (gasket)
A rubber ring between door and tub that keeps water in; lint and moisture collect in it if not cleaned.
Pump filter
A filter in front of the pump that catches lint, coins and small objects; usually opened from a small cover at the bottom front.
Main control board (PCB)
The washer’s brain: reads sensors and drives the motor, pump, valves and heater.
Wiring & connectors
Link components to the board; moisture or rubbing can cause breaks or shorts.
When should you call a technician?
- The drum is empty and the door has stayed locked for a long time.
- The door hook is broken or bent, or the hinge is loose.
- dE appears even with the door firmly closed.
- You urgently need the clothes out and the door won’t open.

Frequently asked questions
Can I force the washer door open?
No. Forcing can break the hook or lock unit — and it is dangerous if there is hot water inside. Follow the steps or call a technician.
Why is there a delay before the door opens?
It is a safety design: the lock releases once the drum has stopped and water and temperature have dropped, which can take one to three minutes.
What do dE1 and dE2 mean?
They are lock sub-codes that vary by model, helping the technician tell whether the switch or the small actuator inside the lock is at fault.
