Samsung washer not heating water: causes and fixes

Laundry comes out cold even on a 40° or 60° programme, or HE or tE appears. Heating depends on three parts: the heater, the temperature sensor and the board that controls them.

Quick answer

A Samsung washer that won’t heat usually has a failed heating element or temperature sensor, sometimes a fault in the board’s heating circuit. First check the programme and selected temperature. Testing the heater requires electrical measurement by a technician — especially if the breaker trips.

Overview

The washer heats water inside the tub using an element underneath and monitors it with a sensor (thermistor). If the temperature doesn’t rise in time, it shows a code such as HE — or on some models simply finishes with cold water.

Hard water, common in parts of Jordan, builds limescale on the heater, reducing efficiency and shortening its life.

Likely causes

  1. 1

    Programme or temperature setting

Some quick or eco programmes use low temperatures by design, and the temperature may be set to “Cold”.

  2. 2

    Failed heating element

The most common cause: an open circuit, or current leaking to the frame — the latter can trip the breaker.

  3. 3

    Limescale on the heater

Scale insulates the heater from the water, slowing heating and overheating the element itself, which shortens its life.

  4. 4

    Temperature sensor fault

A wrong reading makes the board think the water is hot and stop heating — or show tE.

    Related parts: Temperature sensor (thermistor)

  5. 5

    Board heating circuit or wiring

The relay or circuit feeding the heater can fail, or the heater terminals can oxidise.

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before any check

Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.

  1. Make sure you chose a programme that uses hot water and the temperature isn’t set to “Cold”.
  2. Carefully touch the door glass 20 minutes into a 60° programme — it should feel clearly warm.
  3. Notice whether the breaker trips when heating starts; if so, stop using the washer.
  4. Note any code on the display to send to the technician.

Parts involved

Heating element

An electrical element under the tub that heats the water for the selected programme.

Temperature sensor (thermistor)

Measures water temperature so the board can switch the heater on or off.

Main control board (PCB)

The washer’s brain: reads sensors and drives the motor, pump, valves and heater.

Wiring & connectors

Link components to the board; moisture or rubbing can cause breaks or shorts.

When should you call a technician?

  • Water is cold on every hot programme.
  • The breaker trips when heating starts or shortly after.
  • HE or tE appears repeatedly.
  • You notice a faint burning smell while washing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the washer heat its own water or use hot water from the house?

Most Samsung front-loaders in Jordan are connected to cold water and heat it themselves with the internal heater.

Does not heating affect cleaning?

Yes — especially with greasy stains, towels and whites — and it makes odours more likely because cold water doesn’t control bacteria as well.

Can I prevent limescale on the heater?

Regular drum-clean cycles and correct detergent dosing help. With very hard water, a descaling product may be useful.
