Quick answer
Rhythmic rattling while washing is usually a spray arm hitting a dish or utensil. Grinding or crunching means a hard object (glass, bone) in a pump. Humming without spraying suggests a jammed or failed pump. Banging when water enters may come from the valve and plumbing.
Overview
Each programme stage has its own sound: filling, spraying and circulating, then draining. Knowing which stage the noise belongs to is half the diagnosis.
Don’t ignore a new grinding sound — hard objects in the pump can damage its impeller over time.
Likely causes
-
1
Spray arm hitting dishes
Rhythmic clatter while washing; a pan handle or long utensil hanging below the rack blocks the arm.

2
Hard object in a pump
Grinding or crunching while washing or draining from broken glass, a bone or a fruit stone.

3
Circulation pump
Humming or unusually loud noise from the wash motor, or humming with no spray.

4
Drain pump
Loud noise or humming during draining only.

5
Banging when filling
Fast valve closure can cause water hammer in household pipes, especially with high pressure.

Loose dishes
Light cups or containers vibrating and knocking under spray pressure.
Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the dishwasher before any check, and close its tap if there is a leak. Wear gloves when checking the sump in case of broken glass, and don’t open the side or bottom panels.
- Stop the programme and open the door during the noise to see if anything hangs down or moves.
- Spin the spray arms by hand and make sure they move freely and are intact.
- Unplug, clean the filter and carefully check the sump for hard objects (wear gloves).
- Secure light items and don’t let utensils stick out beyond the basket.
- Check the dishwasher is level and its feet are firm.
Parts involved
Spray arms
Rotating arms with small nozzles that spray the dishes; blocked nozzles or collisions weaken cleaning.
Circulation (wash) pump
Drives water at pressure to the spray arms during washing; weakness means dirty dishes.
Drain pump
Pumps dirty water from the sump to the drain hose after each stage.
Dishwasher filter
A filter assembly in the tub floor that catches food debris before it reaches the pumps; needs regular cleaning.
Water inlet valve
An electric valve that opens to let in the right amount of water at each stage.
When should you call a technician?
- Grinding continues after cleaning the filter.
- Humming without spraying, or 3C appears.
- Very loud noise while draining, with weak draining.
- A burning smell with the noise.

Frequently asked questions
Is a click mid-programme normal?
Usually yes — it’s the detergent dispenser opening, or the distributor switching water on some models.
How do I keep broken glass out of the pump?
If a glass breaks inside, unplug and carefully remove the pieces from the sump and filter before the next run.
Can I make my dishwasher quieter?
Correct loading, good levelling and a clean filter reduce many noises; some models have a quiet or night programme.
